CIP-to-SOC crosswalk

The CIP-to-SOC crosswalk maps each Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code to the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes its graduates typically enter. It is published by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), pairing CIP 2020 program codes with the Bureau of Labor Statistics SOC 2018 occupation codes.

Source: NCES CIP 2020 to SOC 2018 Crosswalk, rolled up to the 4-digit CIP level. 415 CIP codes mapped to 2,438 SOC occupations. CIP codes Clema indexes link to their program page. Looking for a job instead? See the reverse SOC-to-CIP crosswalk.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CIP-to-SOC crosswalk?+

The CIP-to-SOC crosswalk is the official mapping from each Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code to the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes graduates of that program typically enter. It links a field of study to the jobs it leads to.

Who publishes the CIP to SOC crosswalk?+

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) publishes the crosswalk, pairing its CIP 2020 program codes with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics SOC 2018 occupation codes. This page rolls the federal 6-digit mapping up to the 4-digit CIP level.

How do I find the SOC code for a CIP code?+

Look up the 4-digit CIP code in the table below to see every SOC occupation it maps to, or open the program page for that CIP to see the same crosswalk alongside earnings, employment, and top institutions.
