Whichever tab you start on, the state, program, or occupation you pick travels with you to the other three.
How are institutions, programs, occupations, and states connected?+
Programs map to occupations through the federal NCES CIP-to-SOC crosswalk. Institutions report which programs they graduate students from in IPEDS completions. States carry their own institution lists, program lists, and BLS wage and employment data. The explorer follows those links in every direction: pick a state, then a program, then see the institutions that offer it there.
Can I see which institutions offer a program in a state?+
Yes. On the Institutions tab, choose a state and a program in the filter panel. The list narrows to every institution in that state with graduates in that program, and each card opens the institution profile.
Why do some program or occupation filters show only the top 50 institutions?+
Without a state selected, the national program and occupation records rank the top 50 institutions (by graduate earnings for programs, by graduates per year for occupations). Choose a state to see every institution there. The list says which of the two views you are looking at.
Where does the data come from?+
IPEDS for enrollment, completions, and institutional characteristics; the College Scorecard for cost and graduate earnings; Bureau of Labor Statistics OEWS and Employment Projections for wages and outlook; Census PSEO for longer-run earnings; and the NCES CIP-to-SOC crosswalk for program-to-job links. Everything is free to view and needs no account.
