AI enrollment agents and chat

Platforms built for higher education that answer students across chat, text and other channels and help move them toward applying. Most also capture leads, hand conversations to staff and connect to your CRM today.

  • Gecko

Gecko describes gecko.ai as "the governed AI Operating System" for building AI agents and workflows, deployed to the web, Teams, Slack and the phone. Its engagement CRM, Gecko Engage, handles "messaging, events and enquiries" and can run alongside Slate.1,2

Best for: Admissions teams that want AI agents, live chat, texting, forms and events in one platform, with sync to the CRM they already run.

  • CollegeVine

CollegeVine sells operations software for colleges and universities and is part of Canopy. Its AI Recruiter handles inbound student inquiries "over phone, email, text, and chat", reaches out to groups of students and helps process transcripts.3,4

Best for: Enrollment teams that want an AI recruiter working inbound and outbound across phone, email, text and chat.

  • Ivy & Ocelot (Gravyty)

Ivy & Ocelot from Gravyty provides "24/7, AI-powered communication across chat, text, email, and social", and Gravyty lists a live assistant, SMS messaging and telephony among its channels.5,6,7,8

Best for: Colleges that want one AI assistant across admissions, financial aid and other offices, with live staff chat and texting.

  • Mainstay

Mainstay offers AI success coaching that puts "a personalized success coach on each learner's phone", reaching students by SMS text messaging, live chat and web chat, with a conversation co-pilot for staff.9,10

Best for: Institutions focused on text-based coaching and follow-up from admission through persistence.

Enrollment CRMs with built-in chat

CRMs where inquiries and applications are stored, which also include their own chat or AI agents. If you already run one, check its built-in chat first. Any other website assistant you add should send leads into it.

  • Element451

Element451 sells Element, an "AI-native CRM built for higher ed", and Bolt AI agents that work on an existing tech stack. For admissions, it says Bolt agents "answer questions 24/7, read applications, and catch fraud".11

Best for: Colleges that want a CRM and AI agents from one vendor, or AI agents added on top of their current systems.

  • Slate (Technolutions)

Slate is the Technolutions CRM for admissions, student success and advancement. Slate for Admissions includes chatbots that are "easily embeddable on any webpage or microsite", and institutions "can deploy as many chatbots as they desire".12,13

Best for: The CRM where many admissions offices already keep inquiries and applications. Treat it as the place leads land; several tools on this page say they work alongside it.

Texting-first engagement

Two-way texting platforms that reach students on their phones. Several also offer web chat and AI that answers routine questions.

  • Mongoose

Mongoose describes itself as an engagement platform for higher ed built on "two-way conversations across text, WhatsApp, and web chat, working alongside your existing CRM rather than replacing it", with AI Agents built in.14

Best for: Enrollment and student success teams that run most conversations by text and want a shared place to manage them next to their CRM.

  • Modern Campus Message

Modern Campus Message is two-way text messaging for higher education that combines "AI-driven automation with personalized 1:1 interactions, all within a single conversation thread".15

Best for: Colleges already using Modern Campus products that want staff and automated texting in one thread.

Peer chat

Tools that connect prospective students with current students. They answer a different question from a website assistant: what it is like to study here, rather than what the deadline is.

  • Unibuddy

Unibuddy is a student-to-student recruitment platform where prospective students chat with ambassadors. Unibuddy Assistant, its website helper, "automatically learns from your website" and connects students with the right person when they need more guidance.16,17

Best for: Recruitment teams, including international, that want current students to do much of the talking, with AI answers alongside.

General AI support agents

Customer service AI agents built for any industry, which some colleges adopt for website and help desk questions. They bring mature help desk features and are general-purpose rather than built for admissions.

  • Intercom Fin

Fin is the Intercom AI agent for customer service. It is built into the Intercom Helpdesk and also works on other helpdesks such as Salesforce, Zendesk and HubSpot, and it hands off to your team "maintaining full customer context". Its pricing page lists $0.99 per outcome for most outcome types.18,19

Best for: Offices that already run a help desk and want one AI agent across chat, email, voice and social, with handoff to staff.

Website-grounded assistants

Assistants whose main job is answering visitors from what your public website already says, with a link to the source. Several tools above can also do this; Unibuddy Assistant, for one, learns from your website.

  • Clema

    Early access

Clema's website assistant, in early access, reads a site's public pages and documents, pulls out deadlines, contacts and dated events, links each answer to the page it came from and says when the site does not cover a question. It is built in the engine and proven on one U.S. K-12 district; not yet run with a college. Lead capture and CRM delivery are in development; live handoff is not available yet.

Best for: Teams whose first need is cited answers drawn from their own website, and who are open to shaping an early-access product with team-run setup.

Common questions

Start with where answers come from and whether visitors can see the source page. Then check what happens when the site does not cover a question, how often content is re-read, whether it captures inquiries and sends them to your CRM, and whether staff can take over a conversation. Ask each vendor to show answers from your own site before you sign.
