Clema vs CollegeVine for admissions websites

CollegeVine’s AI Recruiter is an admissions agent that works inbound and outbound, connected to your CRM. Clema is an early-access assistant that reads your public website and answers visitors with a source link. Here is how they differ today, based on CollegeVine’s own pages.

The short version

These products start from different places. CollegeVine’s AI Recruiter is an established admissions agent: it captures leads in web chat, syncs with Slate and Salesforce, calls, texts and emails students, hands conversations to staff and comes with a SOC 2 Type II report. Clema is in early access. It reads your whole public site, including PDFs and calendars, and puts a source link under each answer, but lead capture and CRM delivery are in development, handoff and texting are not available, and it has been proven on one K-12 district site, not yet on a college. If you need recruiting outreach and CRM-connected lead capture now, CollegeVine is ahead. If your first problem is cited answers from your own website, Clema is worth a look as an early-access partner.

What CollegeVine is

CollegeVine sells AI agents and an operations platform to universities, and it is part of Canopy. Its AI Recruiter handles inbound student inquiries over phone, email, text and chat, goes outbound to groups of students, personalizes email from CRM data and helps process transcripts.2,1

Clema is an early-access website assistant: it reads your public site and answers visitors with a link to the page behind each answer.

At a glance

Each CollegeVine cell links to the public page it came from. Each Clema cell shows where that feature stands today.

Website assistant

  • Chat widget on your website

    CollegeVine
A webchat widget on your site lets the agent answer students. A webchat channel is created in the platform settings, and your web or IT team pastes the install script into your site’s HTML. The channel identifier is set by your CollegeVine team.5,6
    Clema
Demo-gradeA chat widget added with a short script. The widget is demo-grade, not production-ready.
  • How it learns your website

    CollegeVine
Each web page is added by its own URL rather than a whole-site crawl, which CollegeVine says keeps orphan and legacy pages out. Files (.pdf, .csv, .txt, .md, .html), forwarded emails and phone interviews with staff, which the platform summarizes, can be added as well.7
    Clema
BuiltCrawls the whole public site from the sitemap and links, plus PDFs, Word, Excel, slides and calendars, with paths to include or skip. Very long PDFs such as full catalogs are only partly read today. Proven on one K-12 district site; not yet run on a college site.
  • Grounding in your content

    CollegeVine
The agent searches the knowledge base before it replies and grounds factual answers in that content.5vendor claim
    Clema
BuiltAnswers come from the crawled site, with a check before each answer is sent.
  • Source link shown with each answer

    CollegeVine
    Not found on public pages
    Clema
BuiltEach answer links to the page or document behind it. Built in the engine and the demo widget, on one K-12 district site.
  • Deadlines, fees, events and contacts as structured facts

    CollegeVine
    Not found on public pages
    Clema
BuiltPulls dated deadlines, fees, events and office contacts out of pages and files. Built on one K-12 district site; quality on a college site is unproven.
  • When your content does not cover a question

    CollegeVine
Questions outside the agent’s scope, or that trigger an escalation keyword, are routed to a human team.5
    Clema
BuiltTells the visitor the site does not cover it instead of guessing. Sending the request to the right office is in development; live handoff to staff is not available.
  • Keeping content current

    CollegeVine
URL assets are refreshed by hand, one at a time or all at once. CollegeVine recommends refreshing changed URLs at least quarterly, and its new-cycle checklist includes refreshing all URL assets.8,9
    Clema
In developmentPartly built: a re-read processes the pages and files that changed, but scheduled automatic re-reads are not set up yet, so timing is agreed with you.
  • Pages built with JavaScript

    CollegeVine
The agent reads the HTML source, so text added later by JavaScript may be missed.7
    Clema
BuiltSwitches to browser rendering for JavaScript-heavy pages. Tested on school sites so far.
  • Scanned or image-only files

    CollegeVine
For images and video, CollegeVine asks you to upload a transcript or text version.7
    Clema
Not availableImage-only PDFs cannot be read yet.
  • Languages

    CollegeVine
Seven fully supported languages (English in three regional variants, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Japanese and Portuguese). Phone defaults to English, Spanish, French and Hindi, and more can be enabled as needed. In writing it can also understand other languages and, for many that use the Latin alphabet, often replies in them.10
    Clema
Not availableEnglish. Other languages are not available yet.

Lead capture

  • Collecting student details in the chat

    CollegeVine
An intake form, required before the chat or offered behind a button, collects details for lead generation. Schools add their own questions and bind each one to a constituent property.6
    Clema
In developmentCapturing a prospective student’s details in the conversation, with clear consent, is in development.
  • Matching chat leads to existing records

    CollegeVine
The intake form does not match the student to an existing constituent record. Emails typed into it are stored as unverified and cannot be used for email follow-up. Inbound leads, with their intake email, still come back to Slate in the return files.6,12
    Clema
In developmentPart of the lead capture work in development. Nothing is built yet.
  • CRM connection

    CollegeVine
Slate connects through SFTP file syncs, with leads returned in batches. Salesforce connects through a CollegeVine package that imports records and writes inbound leads and engagement data back.12,13
    Clema
In developmentDelivery to your CRM is in development, not live. Tell us which CRM you run; it shapes what we build first.
  • Outbound email, text and phone outreach

    CollegeVine
The AI Recruiter goes outbound to groups of students, for example those who have not filed the FAFSA, and replaces static drip campaigns with email personalized from CRM data.2
    Clema
Not availableNo outbound outreach. Texting and phone calls are not available.
  • Consent for AI calls and texts

    CollegeVine
Schools collect and keep TCPA consent themselves and map a consent field from their CRM. CollegeVine states it does not give legal guidance or verify compliance.11
    Clema
In developmentConsent capture is part of the lead capture work in development. There is no texting to consent to yet.

Help desk

  • Handing a conversation to staff

    CollegeVine
An escalate action routes the conversation to a human team. The agent can also send a recap by email or a follow-up by SMS.5
    Clema
Not availableLive handoff to staff is not available yet.
  • Pointing visitors to the right office

    CollegeVine
    Not found on public pages
    Clema
In developmentOffice contacts and hours are already pulled from your site. Choosing the right office automatically when the site is silent is in development.
  • Help desk behaviors

    CollegeVine
Webchat, helpdesk and email behaviors are set up as agent workflows in the platform.14
    Clema
Not availableNo help desk or ticketing. Not available yet.
  • Reporting on conversations

    CollegeVine
An Insights dashboard with pre-built metric cards, saved reports and custom charts, plus a chart of webchat events over time.14,5
    Clema
In developmentAnalytics and a report of questions your site could not answer are in development.

Setup and pricing

  • Getting started

    CollegeVine
A four-step path: connect your systems, validate against your own history, deploy against agreed outcomes, then expand. The first domain is scoped with your team.1
    Clema

  • Product scope

  • Working CRM connections: Slate through SFTP file syncs and Salesforce through a CollegeVine package that writes leads and engagement data back.12,13

  • Application reading support: processing transcripts, calibrating GPAs and giving admission recommendations.2

Where Clema differs

Built

It reads the whole site, not a list of URLs

CollegeVine adds each page by its own URL rather than crawling the whole site, which it says keeps orphan and legacy pages out of answers. Clema takes the other approach: it crawls your public site from the sitemap and links, along with PDFs, Office files and calendars, and you choose paths to include or skip. Very long PDFs such as full catalogs are only partly read today. It has been proven on one K-12 district site and has not yet been run on a college site.

Built

A source link under every answer

Each answer links to the page or document it came from, so a family can check a deadline or fee for themselves. This is built in the engine and the demo widget, tested on one K-12 district site.

Built

It says when your site is silent

When your website does not cover a question, Clema says so instead of guessing. Answers can still be incomplete or wrong, which is why each one shows its source.

Built

Dated facts pulled out of your pages

Clema extracts deadlines, fees, events and office contacts with their dates, so it can tell whether a deadline is coming up or already past. Built on one K-12 district site; college quality is unproven.

Built

Public pages, no student records

The website assistant reads your public site and documents and has no access to student records. It is designed with FERPA in mind. It uses OpenAI models, and we disclose that up front.

In development

Lead capture and CRM delivery are coming, not here

Capturing a prospective student’s details with consent, and delivering them to your CRM, are in development. Tell us which CRM you run; it shapes what we build first. If you need those on day one, CollegeVine has them today.

Which one fits

Choose CollegeVine if

  • You want an AI agent that recruits outbound by phone, email and text, not just a website chat.
  • You need chat leads flowing into Slate or Salesforce now.
  • Conversations have to reach a human team from the chat today.
  • Your procurement requires a SOC 2 Type II report or a completed HECVAT.
  • You want help reading applications and transcripts, or tools beyond enrollment such as student finance and advancement.
  • You serve visitors in Spanish, French or other languages now.

Choose Clema if

  • Your first problem is visitors who cannot find answers on your website, and you want each answer to link to its source.
  • You would rather have the whole public site and its documents read than maintain a list of URLs.
  • You want an assistant that reads public content and has no access to student records.
  • You are comfortable as an early-access partner and want a say in which CRM connection is built first.
  • You already use Clema for IR, or want both from one team.

Using both

They can sit side by side. CollegeVine works your CRM records and runs outreach; Clema answers public questions on the website with a source link. Today Clema cannot pass conversation details to CollegeVine or to your CRM, so treat it as a separate answer layer until CRM delivery ships.

Clema vs CollegeVine: common questions

Neither publishes pricing. On the CollegeVine pages we read, buying starts with a demo request, and collegevine.com/pricing returned not found on 6 November 2026. Clema has not published pricing for the website assistant either; during early access we agree scope and terms with each college directly.
