Clema vs Gecko for college admissions websites
Both read your website and answer prospective students with sources. Gecko is a shipping platform with chat, texting, forms, events and CRM sync. Clema's website assistant is in early access. Here is how they differ today.
The short version
Gecko is the broader, more mature product for admissions today. Its public pages describe AI agents that cite their sources, live chat handoff into a shared inbox, pre-chat forms that create contact records, events, two-way texting, 50+ languages, bi-directional sync with CRMs such as Slate and Salesforce, and managed setup in about a week. Clema's website assistant is in early access. Its engine reads a site's pages and documents, pulls out deadlines, contacts and dated events, cites the page behind each answer and says when the site does not cover a question, and it has been proven on one U.S. K-12 district, not yet on a college. Lead capture and CRM delivery are in development; live handoff is not available yet. If you need a full engagement and lead capture platform this cycle, Gecko is ahead. If your main need is cited answers on your website and you want to shape an early-access product, talk to Clema.

What Gecko is
Gecko describes gecko.ai as "the governed AI Operating System", a platform for building AI agents and workflows that is "proven in higher education". Its engagement CRM, Gecko Engage, adds live chat, texting, inquiry forms and events for admissions teams.1,12
Clema is an early-access website assistant: it reads your public site and answers visitors with a link to the page behind each answer.
At a glance
Each Gecko cell links to the public page it came from. Each Clema cell shows where that feature stands today.
| Feature | Gecko | Clema |
|---|---|---|
| Website assistant | ||
| Reads your website and documents | Crawls websites, including JavaScript-rendered pages and the PDFs they link to, plus SharePoint, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and S3, and uploads of PDF, Word, CSV, JSON, Markdown and text files.3,1 | BuiltBuilt in the engine: crawls the public site and reads PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and calendar files with no hand-picked source list. Proven on one K-12 district site; not yet run on a college site. Very long PDFs are read from the start, not in full. |
| Sources shown with each answer | "Every answer records the sources behind it", with relevance scores. Gecko Engage says you can "see exactly which URLs it used for any reply".3,9 | BuiltBuilt in the engine and the demo widget: every answer links to the page or file it came from, shown to the visitor as source chips. |
| Typed extraction of deadlines, contacts and dated events | Not found: typed extraction of deadlines, contacts or events is not described on the public pages we read. | BuiltBuilt in the engine: pulls out contacts, dated events and key facts such as deadlines and fees, so a date question gets a date and its source. Tested on one K-12 district; not yet on a college site. |
| When the site does not cover a question | Student services agents route "low-confidence cases" and sensitive topics to a human team. Per-agent minimum relevance scores drop weak results before the model sees them.2,3 | BuiltBuilt in the engine: a check before each answer, and a plain "not covered" reply instead of a guess. Routing that question to the right office is in development. |
| Keeping answers current | Re-crawls websites on a schedule (example shown: nightly), with on-demand re-scrapes; synced drives and SharePoint run on their own schedules (examples: every 6 hours, weekdays).3 | In developmentRe-reads skip pages and files that have not changed. Scheduled automatic re-reads are in development; during early access we agree refresh times with you. |
| Content usage and gap reporting | A page tree showing "Used in N answers" and last-used date, a Stats tab charting which URLs surface in search results, and "a clear view of content gaps".3 | In developmentIn development. A report of questions your site could not answer, and usage analytics, are not available yet. |
| Curated answers and page exclusions | A knowledge base with folders and a rich editor to "curate the answers you want agents to give", plus include and exclude patterns and one-click page exclusions.3 | In developmentNo admin-written answer editor; answers come from your published pages. A screen to exclude pages is in development. |
| Languages | "It supports 50+ languages", replying in a student's preferred language even when source content is in English.9vendor claim | Not availableEnglish. Other languages are not available yet. |
| Channels beyond the website | One agent across web, Microsoft Teams, Slack, phone, SMS, email and API. Gecko Engage also lists Instagram, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.4,9 | Not availableA website chat widget. Texting, voice and social channels are not available. |
| Embed and accessibility | One generated script tag for a chat bubble, inline chat or AI search, with streaming replies shown in the demo, Shadow DOM isolation and origin allowlists. Embeds "target WCAG 2.2 AA", and the API rejects brand colors that fail contrast checks.4,1 | Demo-gradeDemo-grade: a chat bubble from a short script with Shadow DOM, your name and colors. Replies arrive whole; streaming and inline or search embeds are not available. The dialog supports Escape and focus handling; no accessibility conformance is claimed yet. Domain allow-lists are in development. |
| Lead capture | ||
| Capture visitor details in chat | Pre-chat forms collect name, email, program interest and custom fields before a chat starts, and create or update contact records. Where Clema differs
Deadlines and contacts as structured facts
Clema's engine pulls deadlines, fees, contacts and dated events out of your pages and files, so for "when is the priority deadline?" it is designed to give the date, say whether it has passed, and cite the page it came from. Built and tested on one K-12 district; not yet run on a college site.
Says so when your site does not cover it
Each answer is checked against your pages before it is sent. If the site does not cover the question, Clema says that plainly instead of filling the gap. Pointing the visitor to the right office is in development.
A website assistant, not a new platform
Clema is one script on your site that reads what you already publish. It is designed to sit next to the CRM and messaging tools you use now. The widget is demo-grade in early access, and our team sets it up with you.
From the team behind Clema for IR
Clema for IR answers questions from IPEDS, College Scorecard and your institutional data, and it is available today. Sending the questions your site could not answer back to the team that owns your enrollment data is in development.
Which one fits
Choose Gecko if
- You need lead capture, inquiry forms and event registration working this recruiting cycle.
- You want live chat with staff handoff and a shared inbox for chat, email and texts.
- Texting campaigns, phone agents or social channels are part of your plan.
- You need answers in Spanish or other languages now.
- Procurement needs a trust center, VPAT, SSO and college references before you sign.
- You want to build agents for other offices, such as IT or student services, on one platform.
Choose Clema if
- Your main need is cited answers to public questions on your website, with dates and contacts pulled from your own pages.
- You are comfortable with early access: team-run setup, no lead capture yet, and English replies.
- You want to help shape a college version of an engine already proven on one K-12 district's public website.
- You already use Clema for IR and want your website questions to connect back to that team over time.
Using both
They can sit side by side: Gecko for texting, events and CRM-connected follow-up, and Clema on public website pages. There is no integration between Clema and Gecko today, so the two would not share conversations or contacts.
Clema vs Gecko: common questions
Neither publishes pricing on the pages we read. Gecko starts with a booked 30-minute conversation and a scoped first use case. During early access, Clema agrees scope and terms with each college directly.
Both cite sources: Gecko records the sources and relevance scores behind each answer, and Clema links each answer to the page or file it came from. Clema checks each answer against your pages before sending and says when the site does not cover a question. Clema has been measured on one K-12 district's site with its own test set, not on a college, so we do not publish an accuracy figure for colleges.
Gecko's pages describe bi-directional sync with CRMs such as Slate, Salesforce and Dynamics, and agent access to Ellucian Ethos, which sits in front of Banner and Colleague. Clema's CRM delivery is in development, not live, and the website assistant has no access to student records by design.
Gecko lets you choose among several model providers, including OpenAI and Anthropic, or bring your own keys, and states it does not train AI models on institutional data. Clema uses OpenAI models to read page text and write answers. We have not published a written training or retention summary for the website assistant yet, so ask us for the current terms and we will walk through them before anything is installed.
Gecko says a production agent takes under a week on average with managed implementation. Clema does not publish a setup time. In early access our team crawls your site, you review sample answers from your own pages, and then a short script goes on your site. Self-serve setup is in development.
If you rely on Gecko for forms, events, texting or a shared inbox, Clema does not replace those; it covers website answers. You could trial Clema on public pages next to your existing tools, but the two do not integrate today.
