Frequently asked questions

What data does each college profile include?+

Each institution profile pulls federal data on enrollment, graduation and retention rates, net price and cost, student demographics, and program offerings, drawn from IPEDS and the College Scorecard.

How many U.S. colleges and universities are covered?+

Clema covers 5,994 U.S. colleges and universities across 59 states and territories, from research universities to community colleges.

Where does the institution data come from?+

All figures come from public federal sources: the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) for enrollment, staffing, and outcomes, and the College Scorecard for cost and graduate earnings, both published by the U.S. Department of Education.

Can I filter colleges by state, control, level, or Carnegie class?+

Yes. Filter the directory by state, public or private control, 4-year, 2-year, or less-than-2-year level, Carnegie classification, and federal designations like HBCU, HSI, Land-grant, and Tribal, then open any college for its full federal data profile.

Is the college data free to access?+

Yes. Every college profile and its federal data on Clema is free to view and needs no account.

Can Clema answer institutional research questions automatically?+

Yes. Clema is an AI assistant for institutional research and effectiveness teams that answers data requests in plain language from IPEDS, the College Scorecard, and other federal sources, in minutes instead of days.
